Talking about mental health with family

A few ways to start a difficult conversation with care and boundaries.

Families can have different ideas about mental health, and conversations may bring up worry or misunderstanding. Start with what you want them to know rather than trying to change every belief at once.

You might say: “I have been feeling overwhelmed and I am looking for support.” You can decide how much detail to share. Privacy is a reasonable boundary.

If a conversation becomes dismissive or unsafe, it is okay to stop and seek support elsewhere.

You don't have to figure it out alone.

Explore therapists who can support you, in a language that feels comfortable.
